The Kyiv to Lviv train is the most popular rail route in Ukraine — and for good reason. It connects the capital with the country’s most-visited tourist city and has run hourly since the December 2025 timetable update, costing less than a decent lunch in most European cities.
Whether you’re taking the fast Intercity+ during the day or an overnight sleeper, this guide covers everything: schedules, ticket prices, which train to pick, what to expect on board, and what to do when you arrive in Lviv.

Your two options: day train or night train
Option 1: Intercity+ (daytime, fast)
The Intercity+ (IC+) is a modern Hyundai-built express train that covers Kyiv to Lviv in about 5 hours. These are the premium trains on this route — air-conditioned, comfortable seats, power outlets, WiFi, and a small café car.
Typical IC+ schedule:
- Multiple departures throughout the day, roughly every 1–2 hours
- First IC+ departs Kyiv around 6:00–7:00 AM
- Last IC+ departs around 14:00–15:00 PM
- Key train numbers: 705, 706, 715, 716, 741, 742
Classes and prices on IC+:
- First class (1st): Spacious seats with extra legroom, sometimes complimentary snacks. Around 500–600 UAH ($12–14)
- Second class (2nd): Comfortable standard seats. Around 300–450 UAH ($7–11)
Best for: Travellers who want to arrive quickly and enjoy the daytime scenery. Ideal if you want a full day in Lviv after arriving.
Our recommendation: The morning IC+ departures (around 7:00–8:00 AM) get you to Lviv by lunchtime — perfect timing to check into your hotel and explore the city centre.
Option 2: Overnight sleeper train
Several overnight trains run between Kyiv and Lviv, departing in the evening and arriving early morning. The journey takes 8–10 hours, which is perfect for sleeping.
Typical overnight schedule:
- Departures between 19:00 and 23:00
- Arrivals between 5:00 and 7:00 AM
- The best dedicated sleeper is train 91/92 (runs only between Kyiv and Lviv, with 2-berth and 4-berth compartments only — no Platzkart)
Classes and prices on overnight trains:
- SV (1st class): Private 2-berth compartment. Around 900–1,200 UAH ($22–29)
- Kupe (2nd class): 4-berth shared compartment. Around 500–700 UAH ($12–17)
- Platzkart (3rd class): Open-plan sleeper with 54 berths. Around 300–400 UAH ($7–10). Not available on train 91/92.
Best for: Budget travellers (save a night of accommodation), anyone who enjoys the classic Ukrainian train experience, and travellers who want to maximise daytime hours in both cities.
Our recommendation: If you go overnight, book train 91/92 — it’s dedicated to this route, has no Platzkart (so it’s quieter), and the Kupe compartments are well-maintained. If you’re on a tight budget, other overnight trains on the route do offer Platzkart.
How to buy tickets
You have three options:
1. Official Ukrzaliznytsia website (booking.uz.gov.ua). lowest prices, available in English. Tickets open 20 days before departure at 8:00 AM Kyiv time. IC+ trains sell out fast on Fridays and Sundays — book early.
2. Ukrzaliznytsia mobile app. Same prices as the website, supports Apple Pay and Google Pay. Has a useful ticket monitoring feature that alerts you when sold-out trains have cancellations.
3. Third-party platforms (Omio, Proizd, 12Go) Slightly higher prices but more foreigner-friendly. No Diia verification needed. Great option if the official site gives you payment issues.

Which train should you take?
Take the Intercity+ if:

- You’re travelling during the day and want to enjoy the scenery
- You prefer a modern, European-style train experience
- You need WiFi and power outlets for working during the trip
Take the overnight sleeper if:
- You want to save on a hotel night
- You enjoy the authentic Ukrainian train experience
- You prefer to arrive early in the morning and have a full day in Lviv
- You’re on a tight budget (Platzkart is the cheapest option)

What the journey is like
Departing from Kyiv
All Kyiv–Lviv trains depart from Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi — the main central station. It’s well-connected by metro (Vokzalna station on the red line). Arrive at least 20 minutes before departure. Your platform number will be displayed on the departure boards inside the station — look for your train number.
Tip: There’s no formal check-in or security screening. Just walk to your platform, find your carriage number (marked on the outside of each car), and board. The conductor at the carriage door will check your ticket and passport.
During the journey
The route passes through the Ukrainian heartland — flat farmland, small towns, and patches of forest. It’s not the most dramatic scenery, but it’s peaceful and gives you a real sense of the country’s scale.
On Intercity+ trains:
- Seats are numbered and reserved — find yours and settle in
- There’s usually a café car selling coffee, snacks, and sandwiches
- Power outlets at every seat
- WiFi is available (quality varies)
- Stops are brief (1–3 minutes at intermediate stations)
On overnight trains:
- The conductor collects your ticket after boarding and may hand you bed linens
- Hot water is available from the samovar in each carriage — bring a mug for tea
- The bathroom is at each end of the car (bring your own toilet paper just in case)
- The car gets quiet after 22:00–23:00 as the lights dim and people sleep
- The conductor will wake you before arrival if you ask
Arriving in Lviv
Lviv’s main railway station (Lviv-Holovnyi) is a beautiful early 20th-century building located about 2 km west of the Old Town. From the station, you can:
- Walk to the city centre in about 20–25 minutes
- Take a tram — tram #1 runs from the station to the centre (around 10 UAH)
- Take a taxi — about 80–120 UAH ($2–3) to most hotels in the centre. Use the Uklon or Bolt app for fair prices.
Tips for this route
- Book IC+ tickets early — Friday afternoon and Sunday evening trains sell out days in advance. Tuesday through Thursday are the easiest to get.
- Morning IC+ is the sweet spot — depart Kyiv around 7–8 AM, arrive Lviv by 12–1 PM, and have the whole afternoon to explore.
- Bring food for overnight trains — there’s no dining car on most sleeper trains. Pack snacks, sandwiches, and a drink. Instant noodles are a classic choice — hot water is free from the samovar.
- Lower berth = more comfort on overnight trains. Book early to snag one, especially in Platzkart.
- Download offline maps of Lviv before your trip — WiFi on trains can be spotty, and having a map ready when you arrive is helpful.
- The hourly schedule is new — Ukrzaliznytsia introduced hourly Kyiv–Lviv service in December 2025. This means even if your preferred train is sold out, another one departs within the hour.
